The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is pleased to release the Executive Summary of Taking the Next Step Forward: Building a Responsive Mental Health and Addictions System for Emerging Adults. The full report, prepared by a research team from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, will be available in spring 2015.

The MHCC commissioned the report to get best advice on policy directions addressing issues youth living with mental health problems and mental illnesses encounter when transitioning to adulthood. Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada includes a recommendation for action, focused on removing barriers to successful transition between child, youth, and adult mental health services.

The Executive Summary of Taking the Next Step Forward provides an overview of findings by the research team about existing policies and services. It offers recommendations for advancing better services for youth in transition at the national, provincial/territorial, and regional levels.

Following the release of Taking the Next Step Forward in the spring of 2015, the MHCC is hosting a national consensus conference bringing together policy makers, researchers, mental health organizations, clinicians, youth and their families from across Canada to hear evidence on the current state of policies and practices related to the transition between children/youth mental health and addiction services to adult services.
